Compare the Subaru Ascent to the Honda Pilot and Toyota Highlander Today at Ciocca Subaru
Choosing the ideal family SUV usually goes through checking off several needs - passenger and cargo space, technology and safety features, capability, power. When you need to accommodate a growing family, one SUV stands out - the new Subaru Ascent. For a three-row crossover, you won't find a better fit for your lifestyle.
However, the Subaru Ascent isn't without its competition. We encourage all of our drivers to take the necessary steps to make an informed decision on their next vehicle. That includes exploring other options, like the Honda Pilot and Toyota Highlander. Below, you'll find a head-to-head comparison of the Subaru SUV to its two rivals. See how the Ascent stays a step ahead of its competition today!
Subaru Ascent vs. Honda Pilot
While three-row SUVs tend to have ample power underneath the hood, the Ascent and Pilot take different routes to move their vehicles along. The Subaru Ascent utilizes a 2.4-liter turbocharged SUBARU BOXER® engine that outputs 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque. The Honda Pilot equips a 3.5-liter V6 engine that produces 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. While the Pilot holds the horsepower edge, it falls behind in its torque output - the Ascent will have a quicker acceleration.
The Subaru Ascent combines its turbocharged engine with the legendary Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system, offering improved traction control and optimal handling for your off-road adventures. The Honda Pilot does offer AWD, but you'll need to pay extra to benefit from it - Subaru's system is included with every model in the lineup.
Looking to maximize your cargo space? You'll do fine with either lineup, but the Subaru Ascent manages just a bit more than its Honda rival. The Ascent seats between seven and eight passengers, with 17.8 standard cubic feet of storage space and expanding to 86.5 cubic feet. The Honda Pilot starts with 16.5 cubic feet of cargo room, growing to only 83.9 cubic feet when you fold the rear seats flat. You'll carry more cargo on your next camping trip in the Subaru Ascent.
What about features? Both lineups offer an impressive array of convenient options, with the Honda Pilot now carrying a standard touchscreen with smartphone integration. The Subaru Ascent also offers a standard touchscreen, courtesy of the STARLINK® infotainment system, but also provides drivers with peace of mind through LED Steering Responsive Headlights and available Reverse Automatic Braking - you can't find either of these features in the Honda lineup.
Subaru Ascent vs. Toyota Highlander
Engine capability is an important feature for any driver - the Toyota Highlander certainly won't disappoint. The lineup comes equipped with a standard 3.5-liter V6 that pumps out 295 horsepower and 263 pound-feet of torque. While the Highlander outperforms the Honda SUV, the Subaru Ascent again provides more power and better acceleration than its rival.
Off-roading tends to be one of the best features of the Toyota lineup, but the Subaru Ascent manages that feat a bit better than its Highlander competition. The Subaru Ascent comes standard with Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive to take you further down the hidden paths around your home. The Toyota Highlander offers all-wheel drive, but you'll need to pay extra to have it equipped. The Subaru Ascent is also adept at avoiding obstacles in your way with 8.7-inches of ground clearance - .7-inches more than the Toyota Highlander has to offer. The Subaru Ascent also offers X-MODE® to push you through slick and sloppy road conditions - you can't find this feature in the Highlander lineup.
Accommodating your passengers should be guaranteed with any three-row SUV, and neither the Subaru nor Toyota model disappoints. However, you'll find more room to stretch out in the Subaru Ascent, which delivers 153.5 cubic feet of interior passenger space to the Highlander's 141.3 cubic feet of space - a 12 cubic foot difference. Front-row Ascent passengers will also enjoy more headroom and legroom than the same passengers get in the Toyota Highlander.
