See How the Subaru Forester Comparesto the Chevy Equinox and Ford Escape

The new Subaru Forester goes toe-to-toe with the Chevy Equinox and Ford Escape.

The Subaru Forester can be found here at Ciocca Subaru of Allentown. This SUV has long been a popular choice among families for its spacious interior, its many safety features, and its comfortable drive. But is it the right SUV for you? We decided to compare the Forester against other family-friendly SUVs, the Chevy Equinox, and Ford Escape. Let us tell you about all the ways the Forester tackles the challenges of today's SUV market.

Subaru Forester vs Chevrolet Equinox

While Chevy pickup trucks, and many of their larger SUVs, are known for their capability, the standard performance of the Equinox falls short of the Subaru Forester, generating 170-horsepower to the Forester's 182-horserpower, generated by its BOXER engine. Likewise, the Forester has better long-term fuel economy and holds up to 16.6 gallons of unleaded fuel, whereas the Chevy Equinox holds up to 14.9 gallons in its tank.

While most Equinox trims come available with AWD, it is unavailable on the base trim and shoppers often find themselves paying extra to enjoy AWD on the trims where it is available. Al trims of the Forester come fully standard with Subaru Symmetrical AWD and X-MODE.

The Subaru Forester also has a great advantage in its interior. This SUV from Subaru is one of the most spacious of its class, with up to 111.9 cubic feet of passenger volume and 31.1 cubic feet of cargo volume behind the second row. The Chevy Equinox contains a more cramped 99.7 cubic feet of passenger space with 29.9 cubic feet of cargo volume behind the rear seatbacks.

Subaru Forester vs Ford Escape

The Ford Escape's standard engine is a bit more comparable to that of the Forester's, generating up to 181-horsepower. However, the Ford Escape contains up to 14.8 gallons of fuel, so it falls a bit short of the Forester when it comes to long-term fuel economy. The Escape also comes standard with FWD, while AWD trims cost a bit extra. That said, unlike the Equinox, the Ford Escape does offer AWD on all its trims, even the base.

In terms of passenger volume, the Ford also comes a bit closer to the Forester, but does not quite match its spaciousness and has up to 104 cubic feet of passenger volume. With its almost 112 cubic feet of cargo space, the Subaru Forester is one SUV that will not leave your passengers wanting when it comes to breathing room.

As a bonus, the Forester comes standard with a wider range of features that are absent from the base trims of the Escape. Fans of old-school music aesthetics, might enjoy the standard CD player which most SUVs don't have anymore, including the Chevy Equinox and Ford Escape. Each Forester trim also comes with a cargo area cover and a roof rack. The windshield wiper de-icer feature, available through the All-Weather Package, is a convenience Subaru is known for, but does not come available on the Equinox or Escape at all, even on their highest trim levels.
