Compare the Subaru Outbackto the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V

A Comparison of Crossover SUVs: See How the Subaru Outback Compares to the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V.

The Subaru Outback represents the pinnacle of Subaru SUV performance, with a high ground clearance, standard all-wheel-drive, and all the standard and available conveniences you could want on any outdoor getaway. We want to give you some perspective on how much the Subaru Outback can do for you, so we did some research and compared it to two similar crossovers of its class: the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4. See how the Outback comes out on top, then schedule a test drive and visit us here at Ciocca Subaru of Pleasantville.

Subaru Outback vs Toyota RAV4

Against the Toyota RAV4, we see that the Subaru Outback stands out when it comes to interior space and capability. Both are classified as compact SUVs, but the Outback has more breathing room for you and your passengers, with over 109 cubic feet of passenger volume. Despite having the less powerful standard performance of the two, the Outback offers more capability and can tow up to 2,700 lbs. The Toyota RAV4 contains a passenger volume of 98.9 cubic feet, and it can only tow up to 1,500 lbs.

The Subaru Outback also has a few advantages over the RAV4 when it comes to standard features. For one thing, all Outback models come standard with Subaru Symmetrical AWD, whereas, with the RAV4, shoppers must pay slightly extra to opt in for this drivetrain. The Subaru Outback also comes standard with convertible roof rails, with crossbars that fold out to give you a functional roof rack capable of carrying up to 150 lbs. of equipment. The RAV4 comes standard with raised roof rails, but additional rack gear must be purchased additionally or is available on more expensive trims.

Subaru Outback vs Honda CR-V

Comparing the Subaru Outback to the Honda CR-V, we see many of the same areas where the latter falls short. The CR-V's standard engine, while turbocharged, only gives this SUV a 1,500-lb. towing capacity, against the 2,700-lb. capacity of the Outback. Our own compact SUV even gives you a couple different performance options, one of which is a turbocharged SUBARU BOXER® engine generating 260-horsepower, whereas the Honda CR-V features only the one standard engine option. While the Honda CR-V may have a bit more interior space than the RAV4, at 105.9 cubic feet, it still falls slightly behind the 109 cubic feet interior volume of the Subaru Outback.

The Honda CR-V is also lacking many of the same standard features that can be found on the Subaru Outback. As with the RAV4 and other SUVs like it, the CR-V comes standard with a two-wheel-drive system, but customers must pay extra to enjoy AWD. This SUV from Honda also does not come with a convertible roof rack or the LED Steering-Responsive Headlights (SRH) that are now fully-standard on the Subaru Outback.

If you want to enjoy your favorite tunes or podcasts on your next big outing, the Outback is a great choice and comes standard with a SUBARU STARLINK® Multimedia system compatible with Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™. The Honda CR-V does offer compatibility with these two apps, but its base trim does not, so drivers will need to pay extra to enjoy more of the apps they might need on the road.
